A Peek Into the Italian Lifestyle

Introduction:

Italians enjoy family, friendship and community, and many of their traditions reflect these values. In this article, we'll take a look at some special Italian customs, from the practice of aperitivo to picking chestnuts in the fall.

What tradition did I learn about?:

One of my favorite traditions is aperitivo, which is a mini meal before dinner. Friends meet at un bar (a cafe) before dinner for small snacks such as salami, cheese and crackers and drinks while enjoying the evening air. Apertivo is the perfect way to relax and connect after a long day of work or school.

Another tradition I learned about from an Italian friend is chestnut picking in the fall. Families go to the mountains and collect chestnuts that have fallen from the trees. Later, they roast them and eat them warm. This tradition is similar to picking pine nuts in the mountains back home.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Italians really value family, friendship and community, so most of their traditions are about coming together.
