Silver Over Gold: Silver Chains in Vietnam

Introduction:

While teaching some of my classes, I noticed that many of my students were sporting silver chains. I wondered why the chains were so popular.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned from my host mother that silver chains in Vietnam are often given to children to symbolize prosperity and wealth. The chains come in many different designs, sizes and lengths. The chains are always glistening silver and proudly worn.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Silver is a desired metal that shows wealth. Both boys and girls wear these stylish chains. Children as young as a few months old are gifted chains from their parents. Silver chains are seen as very stylish and trendy.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Silver is more affordable, durable and easier to find than pure gold. Silver is seen as very modern and sleek. It is a more subtle sign of wealth because it is not too extravagant.
