It's not only the chapines who love Semana Santa (Holy Week); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization lists Semana Santa as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It basically says this is one of the coolest cultural events in the world. What makes it so special? That would be the attention to detail and dedication in the alfombras and procesiones.
During Semana Santa, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, there are various activities. The primary events are the procesiones. Catholics will meet up at their church and carry their procession float around the town throughout the night. They perform this act to emulate Jesus' journey to the cross and for public penance.
Another critical part of Semana Santa is the alfombras (carpets). Local families or organizations will work together to create these elaborate alfombras with dyed sawdust, flowers, and other natural resources to make elaborate pictures of Christ and other religious symbols.
