Comida Chapina

Introduction:

Refas (snacks) make the world go around in Guatemala. Whether going to school, attending a workshop, or attending other social events, there is an expectation of having refa. Refa usually will consist of a food and a refresco (drink). If they snack like this, you might be wondering what they eat for meals. Depends on the occasion. When I lived with my first host family, they would eat eggs three meals a day. This is because eggs are easy to make and customizable. Plus, depending on the family, they could be like my current host family, who raise chickens. Of course, you can't end a good meal without dessert. Chapines (Nickname for Guatemalans) love sweets, and they're everywhere.

What food did I try?:

While living in Guatemala, I have so many favorite foods. My favorite refa is a tostada con frijoles volteados with a mango or a tostada con pico de gallo con carne de res. My favorite basic meal is making huevos desvueltos (scrambled eggs) with in-season vegetables. My favorite holiday meal is fiambre, and my favorite desserts are granizadas hawaianas and espumillas

How did I feel when I tried it?:

A lot of these foods have interesting combinations of flavors.
