Integrating Into My New Home in Quito, Ecuador

Location:
Quito, Ecuador
Journal Entry:

On arrival in Ecuador, I had the loveliest welcoming from the Fulbright Commission, which is the group of people who coordinated my English teaching grant in Ecuador. That first day, I also met my Fulbright cohort, who are the other English teaching assistants and researchers in Ecuador.  I was nervous to meet my cohort but they were a very sweet bunch. During orientation week, we went sightseeing and enjoyed delicious meals together. They were genuinely interested in getting to know me and now we are all very good friends.

The Fulbright Commission was great and helped us learn more about what to expect as Fulbright English Teaching Assistants. At the end of the week, it was time for each of us to go to our teaching placements in different towns around Ecuador. It was sad to part ways with my new friends, but I was excited to meet my new host family.

My host family was the most welcoming! I live with a sweet mom named Monica and her 10 year-old chatty daughter Raphaela. Monica is very close with her parents and brother, and she visits them often. I love joining them for Sunday afternoon asados (charcoal grilled meats).

When I arrived in my new home, my room was nicely fixed and decorated.
