It is officially the rainy season in Malawi! Also known as the "green season," it typically runs from December to early April, though the rains actually began in late October this year. When I first arrived, the surroundings were dry and dusty, but now the country has exploded with plant life. While we call it the rainy season, the days often start out partly cloudy before a heavy downpour in the early afternoon. The rain hits the roof with a sound like beating drums.
I often go for walks on trails in the Lilongwe National Park wildlife center. It is filled with over 200 species of migrating birds and vervet monkeys everywhere you turn. I also looked for crocodiles in the river but have yet to see them, even though the wildelife center's employees warn about them. There are quite a few baby monkeys this time of year and they are fairly used to humans being around.
