Olive Oil Farm and Sustainable Farming

So, inside and out, olive oil supports digestion and is good for your skin!

What community need did I learn about?:

The field-trip to the olive farm taught me about the community's need for sustainable agriculture (farming), which mainly means reducing the negative consequences of tourism on the natural environment. There is a lot of farming in Italy, as well as a lot of tourism. Both of these industries can have negative impacts on the environment and communities.

Why does the community have this need?:

Sorrento, and Italy as a whole, rely heavily on tourism to support their economy and to provide jobs. This is good, but it also has its drawbacks. As I mentioned earlier, tourism can be hard on the environment and local communities...

Think about visiting a national park in the U.S.A. It is beautiful because it is natural, but if many people come every day, year after year, its is likely this overuse will start to show.  In the national parks example, some visitors may step off the trails and damage local plant life by stepping on it; they may illegally hunt animals; or they may forget their trash behind and spoil the local environment with their litter.

These negative outcomes can be caused deliberately or accidentally. It is up to us as individuals to be responsible travelers and make sure we respect the environment and nature of the place we are visiting as well as the people who live there. This is the goal of sustainability: to enjoy the present while conserving it enough that future people can also enjoy the same things we do!

Is this need being met? How?:

This farm is contributing to the community’s need for sustainable farming.
