A Fulbright Journey: Teaching, Cultural Exchange and Growth

As a teaching assistant, I support English lessons, collaborate with teachers and share aspects of American culture with my students. At the same time, I continue improving my German by listening carefully, asking questions when needed, and practicing in everyday situations. Outside of school, I’ve learned to navigate public transportation, explore new cities and handle daily life independently-experiences that have strengthened my confidence.

Experiencing German culture firsthand has been unforgettable. I have attended a traditional Karneval celebration, gone ice skating at a local rink and visited small towns that feel like they belong in a storybook. I’ve tried new foods like Spätzle and Black Forest cake, and I’ve enjoyed discovering how everyday routines, from school schedules to bakery visits, reflect cultural differences.

I’ve also learned that belonging takes time. Building relationships, understanding new routines and finding your place in a different country does not happen overnight. But through shared experiences and open conversations, Germany has begun to feel like a second home. The students, teachers and community members I’ve met have made a lasting impact on me.

I hope that sharing my Fulbright experience shows you that opportunities like travel, study abroad or international work are possible for you, too. You do not need to have everything figured out right now. Staying curious, asking questions and being open to new experiences can lead you somewhere incredible.

Thank you for being part of this Reach the World exchange and for engaging so thoughtfully throughout this program.
