Comida en Mérida! (Food in Mérida!)

Introduction:

The unique flavors of the Yucatán are due to its rich heritage. Here, food uses both local ingredients and those which have their origins in other lands (such as Spain) but have been adopted by Yucatecos (which is what many people who live in the Yucatán state proudly call themselves).

What food did I try?:

Cochinita Pibil, Panuchos, Relleno Negro and Papadzules are some of the many delicious foods I've tried.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

It was absolutely delicious! I don't really eat meat, but even the no-meat options that I have tried taste amazing and is so flavorful!

How is the food prepared?:
  • Cochinita Pibil is deliciously flavored pork marinated with sour orange juice, and spices, cooked in banana leaves, topped with pickled red onions served with sauteed black beans, rice, and steamy tortillas; you can also have it as a filling for tortas (a type of sandwhich).
  • Panuchos are crispy handmade corn tortilla, spread or filled with black beans, topped with lettuce, shredded turkey (or less traditionally other meats), pickled red onions, tomato and a slice of avocado.
  • Relleno Negro is turkey with a soupy black sauce.
