The Gromperekichelcher, the Trounwiessel, and the Grand Duke: Festive Food for Fantastic Occasions!

Introduction:

Luxembourg is a “hidden gem,” of a country. Tucked between France, Belgium and Germany, it is the last remaining “Grand Duchy” in the world. (This means that, rather than a king, Luxembourg has a “Grand Duke”!) Because of its geography, Luxembourg’s culture, languages and cuisine have all been heavily influenced by the surrounding nations. For example, while Luxembourgish is its own language, there are many words influenced within it by French, Dutch and German. For this field note, I would like to highlight some food that I ate as part of the Trounwiessel (pronounced tr-own-vee-uh-sell), which celebrated the inauguration of the new Grand Duke, Guillaume (Gee-ohm)!

What food did I try?:

The Trounwiessel is a once-in-a-lifetime event. After all, Grand Dukes do not abdicate from their thrones often! Thus, there was a lot of celebration throughout Luxembourg on the Duke’s ascension day, and by extension, a lot of food to try!

Currywurst, for example, is like the older brother to American hot dogs.
