Luxembourgers will take a grilled bratwurst (a type of sausage), cover it in “curry ketchup,” and sprinkle the whole thing in curry powder. It tastes similar to a hot dog, but a little spicier, and with more of a “snap” to the sausage! Waffles, too, are very popular here. (Remember, we are in proximity to Belgium… as in, “Belgian Waffles”, Belgium!) They are usually served with chantilly (whipped) cream and powdered sugar.
Most new to me and most famous in Luxembourg, however, was the gromperekichelcher (gromp-uh–ruh-kee-shell-sure). A sibling to latkes or hashbrowns, these delightful snacks are made from a variety of spices, shredded potatoes, eggs, and sunflower oil. Served with apple sauce or fresh cream, these potato pancakes are to die for! What is even better is that the recipe is fairly simple… so you all could even make them at home.
After initially burning my tongue, I bit into the gromperekichelcher and immediately realized that I had a new favorite food in Luxembourg. The crust of the pancake is cooked enough to crack cleanly, and there is a savory, mashed-potato like flavor on the inside. Eating the steaming pancakes while surrounded by the music and lights of the Trounwiessel, I felt my heart grow three sizes.
