Hey kids! Today, I'd like to share one of my favorite topics with you, Polish mythology! Myths are very old tales that people used to explain the world around them. They typically contain gods, monsters, mystical lands and everything in between. We're going to look at three of Poland's most important myths. These stories try to answer big questions in a big way. These stories are truly epic, in every sense of the word!
Lech, Czech and Rus
Do you wonder where we all came from, or how we all got here? Well, for Poland, this question is answered in the tale of three great brothers: Lech, Czech and Rus.
The three brothers were the leaders of a great tribe that needed food very quickly or else they'd starve! The brothers decided to each lead a group of people on a hunting trip to get food. They went on a long, tiring journey.
The people Rus led were very tired, so Rus decided to stay on the plains. These plains became the lands of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.
Lech and Czech carried on toward the west, following the beautiful sunset, until they reached the mountains. Czech was so overwhelmed by the beauty of the sunset that he decided that he and his people would stay there. Those lands became what is now Czechia (also known as the Czech Republic) and Slovakia.
