Polish Mythology

One day a fisherman saw something thrashing and making waves in his net. Figuring it was a very big fish, he ran to the pier to investigate, but what he found shocked him. He had caught a beautiful mermaid! Her beauty and elegance overwhelmed him, and he freed her immediately. Thankful that the fisherman had freed her, the mermaid revealed she was the daughter of King Baltic, the god of the sea! She had swam from his great sea down the Vistula River when she got caught in the fisherman's net. Out of gratitude to the fisherman, she told King Baltic of the fisherman's selfless deed and the King blessed the little river town where the fisherman lived as protected from all invaders from the sea. Soon, the town prospered and grew into Poland's biggest city, Warsaw.
