Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

German is the main language spoken here, especially in Würselen. As Aachen has a large international population, I often hear other languages, especially English, being spoken as well.

Recently, I have been speaking a mix of languages. At work, I speak German with the teachers I work with, but speak with the students almost exclusively in English. Meanwhile, I share an apartment with two international students from India. We speak to each other mostly in English, but we still end up using some German words here and there. At the university gym in Aachen, I befriended an exchange student from São Paulo, Brazil–the place my family is from and where I lived when I was younger. We speak and exercise together in Portuguese.

What type of money is used here?:

Like most of Europe, the currency in Germany is the euro. Though many places allow paying with credit or debit card, it is most common to pay with cash or coins. When paying with a card, it is important to clarify first, as some shops or restaurants only accept cash. You can do this by saying mit Karte bitte (with card please).

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A standard bottle of water can cost as high as €3.50 or more at a restaurant, or as little as €0.30 at a supermarket or discounter.
