In Japan, the main spoken language is Japanese. Signs around Tokyo often have Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English text to help people get around. For the most part, announcements and important information will be relayed in Japanese and then English. But there are times when it is only in Japanese, so I have to listen very intentionally to understand what is being said!
The currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen. Japan is still a very cash-centered society, so some places only accept cash and cannot take any other forms of payment. There are ¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000, and ¥10,000 bills. When paying for things, I tend to get a lot of change "おつり(otsuri)", so I have to carry around a coin pouch. There are 6 different yen coins: ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100, ¥500. I have a lot of ¥100 coins because I love the arcades!
A bottle of water from a vending machine is about ¥160-¥180, or around $1.00-$1.13, which is very cheap! They are sometimes cheaper than supermarkets, and there are vending machines everywhere so you can always buy a drink.
