Ghana has over 80 different languages spoken across the country! In my village, three languages are spoken.
The main language is called Krobo, named after a local tribe. The Krobo people are famous for making bright and beautiful beads that are worn all over the world. I’m slowly trying to learn Krobo, but it’s tricky for me to say some words with my American accent.
The second language is Twi, which is the most common language in all of Ghana.
Some people also speak English, but it is not used very often.
Money in Ghana is called a cedi, and it comes in shiny coins and colorful bills. The coins are 10, 20 and 50 pesewas (like little cents), plus 1 and 2 cedi coins. The bills come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 cedis. Unlike at home, you usually can’t swipe a card, so almost everything is bought with the cash in your pocket!
A long time ago, people used sea snail shells as money. These shells were called “sedi.” When Ghana became independent, they named the money “cedi” to remember this cool tradition.
