Finding Culinary Comforts 4,000 Miles from Home

Introduction:

Dobrý den (Hello!) from Brno, Czech Republic! I hope you all have had a wonderful first week of school. It has been a few weeks since I moved to the Czech Republic, and I’m having a wonderful time. As exciting as being in Europe is, there are definitely a lot of big adjustments to my day to day life… one being food, of course.

What food did I try?:

While I’ve been trying a lot of different foods since arriving, my favorite has been a traditional Czech dish called svíčková (svee-ch-koh-vah). Svíčková is a beef-based dish accompanied by a side of bread dumplings, joined together by a rich cream and vegetable sauce.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Svíčková definitely isn’t a meal that looks appealing to the eye, unlike many other Czech dishes. However, once you’ve overcome your visual judgement, it is quite delicious and filling. After lots of small quick meals while traveling from city to city, I was immensely relieved to eat something that felt home-cooked. Though it might not look familiar compared to our food in the United States, eating svíčková reminded me of a nice Thanksgiving meal... heartwarming filling, and made with love.
