Ahoj (Hello), my name is Danika! I'm originally from Illinois, about an hour outside of Chicago. Five years ago, I moved to New York to study Music Performance and Literature at the Bard College Conservatory of Music. During my time in college, I found myself incredibly interested in the way music affects culture and language. I decided to take that passion one step further and apply for a U.S. Fulbright Research Grant, which I'm about to begin!
My grant will be sending me to the Czech Republic, where I'll be studying how the Czech composer Janáček helped preserve Czech language and culture through his music. This trip is extra special to me, as my grandparents are originally from the Czech Republic. When they were 23, they left in search of a better life for their family. They've given us an incredible life in Illinois, and since their move, the Czech Republic has changed drastically. Now, at that same age, I'll be moving back to their homeland. I'm incredibly excited to get to immerse myself in their culture. My research includes attending concerts, interviewing scholars, and reading old documents. When I'm not busy with research, I'll be performing with a local orchestra, tutoring locals in English, or exploring local castles! I can't wait to share my journey with you.
