A Warm Mountain Meal after a Cold Hike

Introduction:

Last weekend, my host family took a friend of mine and me on a beautiful snowy mountain hike. We strapped on snowboots, put our hands firmly on our walking poles, and began our trek up the mountain. There was so much fog that visibility was low, and the trees we saw were covered with icy snow. It felt like I was walking through a video game or a scene out of Game of Thrones, but this was real life.

Gripping the poles and pushing into the soft snow, I continued the journey to the top of the mountain. We were walking through a ski resort, on a mountain in the Jura Range near the border of France and Switzerland. However, being that high up, it felt like borders didn’t matter – only finishing the mission of climbing to the top with my friend and host family.

By the time we got to the top, the sky opened up, and we saw the finish! We just spent the last two hours hiking, and finally we made it. We were all tired and worked up a massive appetite! At the top of the mountain, we ate fantastic food. I chose to eat a plate of meat, sausages, potatoes, and sauerkraut, or choucroute in French. Of course, I had to get dessert too! I chose to eat a delightfully sweet and tart pear pie to give me the extra sugar for energy to sustain me on the hike back down the mountain.
