Traveling in Tricycles (and more)

Introduction:

Because Filipinos do not typically own cars, public transportation is readily available. Motorcycles, tricycles, jeepneys, and buses are the most common forms. When traveling in the mountains or between the islands, special forms of transportation are needed, which I will tell you about!

How do people get around?:

The most common form of transportation is a motorcycle or a tricycle (a motorcycle with a carriage attached to the side for extra riders). Usually, a motorcycle or tricycle is hired on the side of the road where drivers are waiting, and people can share rides for short distances.

For longer distances, people will take buses. Trying to find a bus schedule is almost impossible online, but these buses run regularly around the islands. These bus trips can take over 12 hours, which is like taking a bus ride from Maryland to Disney World, including a boat ride! A ferry is available for travel between the islands!

One of the most unique forms of transportation in the Philippines is the jeepney. These vehicles are converted from World War II military jeeps and are decorated with bright and beautiful designs. Jeepneys are like buses with benches facing each other on either wall and metal railings on the ceilings for passengers to hold onto during bumpy and rocky rides.
