Getting Around Malaysia

Introduction:

Getting around in Malaysia is not too different than getting around in the U.S.  People in both countries use cars, motorcylces, trains, and buses to get from place to place. I enjoy getting around in Malaysia. Depending on where you want to go, there's a variety of different modes of transportation to choose from.

How do people get around?:

For most day-to-day travels, people in Malaysia use a car or motorbike to get around. For long distance travels, some people take the K.T.M., the main commuter train in Malaysia, or a bus. If you want to go to Langkawi, the nearby island, you can take the jeti, or ferry. In addition to these possibilities, there's always good old fashioned walking. For example, I usually drive everywhere, but some days I feel like walking, so I'll walk to the market nearest to my house.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I experienced a learning curve when I first began driving in Malaysia. In the U.S., people drive on the right side of the road, which is why the the steering wheel is found on the left side of the car. However, in Malaysia, people drive on the left, meaning that the steering wheel is located on the right side of the car. Did you know that almost 70% of world drives on the right side of the road? It took me some time to get used to driving here.
