Caring For Our Community One Bit of Rubbish at a Time

Introduction:

I recently noticed a new garbage bin in front of my house. I was really confused. I looked around to find the person that might have accidently left it in front of my house, but instead I found that everyone in my neighborhood had a similar new bin. Puzzled, I asked around my community and learned that it was a new plan by the local government to decrease the amount of littering. This opened my eyes to the problem of littering in Kangar.

What community need did I learn about?:

Sungai Perlis, or the Perlis River, is the fourth longest river in Perlis. It stretches almost twelve kilometers, or about seven and half miles. I don't live too far from it, maybe about a five to seven minute drive. As you pull up to the river, you can see the village homes lined up along it. Some of the homes are on stilts, and if you look under them, you can see mountains of trash that spill over into the river. The growing pile of rubbish has caused many of the river's residents to feel concerned. The community needs ways to keep the trash at a minimum.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community has a need to fix this problem because many people rely on the fish that the river provides, and residents near the river worry about their health and well-being.
