






It feels like you went back in time! Pulpo a feira translates to fair-style octopus, so the dish is deeply connected to the tradition of fairs that have occurred in the region. The festival in Lugo was called San Froilán, named after a Catholic saint from the city. There are tons of rides, live music, markets and fair tents with food! It is like how you might go to a fair during the summer or fall in Kansas and get fair food, but instead of turkey legs, corn on the cob or hotdogs, you can get octopus. Octopus and fairs go hand-in-hand in Galicia, so I knew I had to try it. Thankfully, I made sure to try the octopus AFTER I rode on the fair rides. I went on a ferris wheel, bumper cars and a pirate ship at the fair, and it was super fun! It was like the Spanish version of Worlds of Fun Haunt Night, where the rides light up at night.
Octopus and other seafood are also connected to the environment in Galicia because the region borders the Atlantic Ocean. The region has one of the longest coastlines in Spain, and has many little rivers (called rías baixas) that jut out from the ocean and surround the cities in the area. This created the perfect conditions for fish to thrive centuries ago, and people here have been living off fish and perfecting seafood dishes for generations. Now, seafood is easy to find and affordable all across the region!
