By working directly with local employees, you can better establish yourself in the community and make connections outside your program that directly relate to your future career. Doing this requires getting a work visa separate from the provided student visa, which in turn allows you to get a job while abroad.
Tips and Advice
Typically, a semester abroad comes with a higher cost, regardless of the university. Scholarships can be a great resource, however, so if you are planning on studying abroad, make sure to look into study abroad-specific ones like the Gilman International Scholarship that helped me this semester! The earlier you can get an application in, the better. Some scholarships even allow applications to be submitted before you are officially committed to a program, under the condition that you know which specific semester you will need the funds for.
Once you are committed to a program, definitely check the weather for average temperatures during the months you will be studying there! One thing that is helpful to purchase in your preparation is a handheld luggage scale. As tempting as it is to bring a full wardrobe, luggage overweight fees are not forgiving at any airport, and it is highly likely you will be shopping once you arrive as well. When packing suitcases, I also used vacuum-seal bags to maximize the space.
Studying abroad can also get quite costly, depending on where you live and what is provided with your lodging. I started saving about eight-to-nine months before I flew out simply because that is when I was officially accepted into the program.
