When the city was originally being built, it was a sign of wealth to have a house with multiple levels and balconies. So when you walk along the city streets you can see balconies on most of the houses. On these balconies, you often find the beautiful, climbing flower called bougainvillea. This was one of my favorite parts of Cartagena, because these wonderful flowers made the city so vibrant and welcoming.
