Nazlı lives in a dorm with three roommates, all of whom are her classmates. As a foreigner, she feels less connected with others in the dorm. Nazlı is doing her best to assimilate. The dorm is affordable at 750 lira per month (around $20), and it has its own cafeteria.
Nazlı is the oldest of six siblings, so she has a lot of duties at home. Her parents don’t speak Turkish, so she often helps them with various tasks when they need a translator. In the dorm, she doesn't have to worry about chores because the staff handles cleaning and cooking. However, when she's at home, she has many chores and a strict curfew.
Nazlı’s mother is a housewife, and her father has had many jobs but is currently not working.
Nazlı's school starts early at 8:30 AM and finishes at 4:30 PM. It's difficult for her to go to sleep early because the dorm is often loud. She tries to set rules with her roommates to create a quieter environment.
Nazlı sometimes walks to school when the weather is nice, which takes her about half an hour. If she’s tired or if the weather isn’t great, she takes the bus instead. She goes to school alone, as she is used to being independent and managing the trip on her own.
