Spanish Traditions: Siestas, Sobremesas, Las Meriendas, El Paseo, and Late Dinners!

Introduction:

Welcome to my field note on Spanish traditions! Living in Madrid has shown me how different the daily routines here are from home. From afternoon rests to late-night meals, daily traditions in Spain revolve around taking your time and gathering with family and friends.

What tradition did I learn about?:

In Spain, I learned about five major daily traditions: la siesta, la sobremesa, la merienda, el paseo, and late dinner times!

  • La Siesta: A traditional afternoon break where people go home to rest, recharge, and avoid the hottest hours of the day.
  • La Sobremesa: This literally means "over the table." It’s the tradition of staying at the dining table long after finishing a meal to talk, laugh, and connect with family and friends instead of rushing away!
  • La Merienda: A light afternoon snack (for example, churros y chocolate or a small sandwich) that is enjoyed around 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM to keep everyone energized between lunch and dinner.
  • El Paseo: An evening stroll where people walk around city streets, plazas, parks, and say hello to neighbors and enjoy the evening air.
  • Late Dinners: Dinner here in Spain usually starts around 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM!
