Water Fights, Music, and a Crown: My Carnaval Experience

Why does the community have this tradition?:

In Cajamarca, Carnaval is more than just a fun event. It’s a tradition that brings everyone together! Families, friends and neighbors all join in to celebrate their culture, music and history. People sing traditional songs called coplas, play instruments, and even paint their faces and clothes with bright colors!

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Carnaval happens during the rainy season in Cajamarca, when everything is green and full of life. Water is a big part of the fun. People splash each other with water balloons or buckets of water! This may sound silly, but it’s also a way of celebrating the rain and the earth. Here in the Andes mountains, rain helps the crops grow, so it's super important for farmers and families.

By celebrating with water and colorful paint, people are also showing thanks for nature. The rain, the rivers, the flowers, all of them help make life in Cajamarca possible. Some say Carnaval is a way of giving joy back to the Earth.

Carnaval helps people remember who they are and where they come from. It’s a time to laugh, dance, sing, and be proud of their traditions. And just like the mountains and rivers that surround Cajamarca, this celebration is something that connects everyone, young and old, year after year.
