Hello, my name is Michaela Shelton, and I am studying abroad in the U.K. to get my Master's degree in Anthropology. I was originally born and raised in New York, NY, and have lived in major cities like Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA. Growing up in a diverse city like New York led me to develop a deep appreciation for food, art, culture, and music. When I'm not in class or studying, you can find me exploring art galleries, museums, trying out local restaurants, and singing at karaoke.
At Pomona College, I wrote my political science senior thesis on hair discrimination in South Africa and New York, and I will continue to explore these very issues here in the U.K. After graduating from Pomona, I began a career in organizing and advocacy around civil rights, democracy, educational equity, voter protection, and social justice for political campaigns and nonprofits.
I'm grateful to have been awarded the Fulbright University of Bristol award to obtain my fully funded master's degree in Anthropology. I currently reside in Bristol, which is about 90 minutes from London, and am excited to study and experience Black hair salon culture while I am here! I look forward to fostering dialogue about my studies overseas with your learning experiences in the classroom.
