Mexico’s Fútbol Tradition: Road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Introduction:

If there is one tradition that truly brings Mexico together, it is fútbol (soccer), the heartbeat of national pride, celebration and community. From children playing on neighborhood fields to families gathering around the television on game days, fútbol is woven into everyday life in a way that feels almost magical. During my time in Mexico City, I have quickly realized that fútbol is not just a sport here, it is a tradition that reflects history, identity and the spirit of Mexicans. This tradition feels even more alive now as the country prepares to help host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, beginning next June. Excitement is already in the air, especially in Mexico City. I even had the opportunity to participate in the volunteer tryouts for the tournament. It was an unforgettable experience that offered a firsthand look into Mexico’s long relationship with the World Cup. It also showed me how deeply people care about being part of a global event that connects countries through sport, community and what many call sports diplomacy.

What tradition did I learn about?:

During my stay in Mexico City, I have learned about one of the most important traditions in the country: fútbol.
