Life in the Selva

Introduction:

I live in La Peca, Amazonas, Peru. That might not mean much to you right now, so let me help you break it down. In Peru, there are three main types of geography: la costa, la sierra, y la selva (the coast, the desert mountains, and the jungle).

The coast has beautiful beaches and lots of ocean wildlife. It’s very similar to what we think of as the coast in the United States — but that’s not where I live.

The sierra, or mountain region, is part of the Andes, the longest mountain range in the world. It’s high, dry, and full of animals you won’t find naturally in the U.S., like llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. I don’t live there either.

The selva is the famous Amazon Rainforest, known all around the world for its incredible biodiversity and stunning waterfalls. I don’t quite live there either — but I live close!

I live in the Department of Amazonas (kind of like a U.S. state), in a town called La Peca.
