Life in the Selva

It’s a place where the mountains and the rainforest meet, and you can really see how people and nature depend on each other every day.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The environment in La Peca gives people almost everything they need to live. The warm weather and frequent rain make it easy to grow food all year long. Families plant bananas, corn, yuca, cacao, and coffee, and many also raise chickens, cows, or pigs on big natural farms called chacras. Because of this, most people can eat food grown right in their own community and sell their produce internationally.

The quebradas — the small rivers that run through town — are also very important. They provide fresh water for washing clothes, watering crops, and sometimes even for drinking when treated properly. The rivers connect nearby villages and bring life to the plants and animals around them. During hot days, many kids swim and play in the cool water.

The forests and hills around La Peca help protect the town too. Trees provide shade and clean air, and their roots keep the soil in place when it rains. Forest plants are also sometimes used as natural medicine.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Even though La Peca’s environment provides many resources, it also brings challenges. Because it rains so much, heavy storms can cause flooding or mudslides that damage roads and houses. The rain makes travel difficult, and sometimes dangerous in the rainy season.
