Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, so it is also the main language spoken in the Azores. Because the islands are so isolated, the language sounds a bit different here than in the rest of mainland Portugal! I learn a little bit every day, and it can sound a little bit like Spanish to me. Many people here also speak English. People from all over the world pass through the marina with their boats, so you hear lots of languages here.
Much like the rest of Europe, euros are used here. They do not use dollar signs like $. Instead you may see EUR or €. One euro is about $1.11. The bills here are different colors and very pretty! They also use coins for smaller amounts. There are no €1 bills; there are coins, instead!
A 0.5 liter bottle of water, which is a little bit bigger than a normal bottle of water in America costs about €0.70 at the store here. That's about $0.78 in American dollars! However, tap water is safe to drink all across the island, so I don't buy bottled water often.
