Olá (Hello)! My name is Maya Philipp, and I am originally from Folsom, California! I grew up interested in the ocean and loved visiting aquariums whenever I could. I went to college in San Diego, California, to learn more about the ocean and the animals that live there. While I was there, I learned about how whales make sounds underwater.
Now, I am studying in Syracuse, New York, where I research where whales like to swim and what makes them choose certain places.
I am very lucky to have received a U.S. Fulbright Research Grant, which is a program that allows people like me to travel to another country, learn about the people and places there, and share what I know, too.
I will be living in the Azores, a group of islands off the coast of Portugal, where I will study sperm whales. I hope to learn more about where they swim around the islands and how we can help keep them safe from boats.
