Mahasawat Elementary School's English Program

Introduction:

Mahidol University has several volunteer programs to help their local communities. I tagged along at Mahasawat School, a local elementary school where Thai kids begin basic English in grade 3 or 4.

What community need did I learn about?:

The community need I learned about was English skills. Not all Thai people have the opportunity to learn English. However, students at nearby schools, such as the one I visited, get supplemental help from local college students to help the school kids better know this language.

Why does the community have this need?:

This is important because Thailand has a lot of visitors from around the world who do not know Thai. So in order to cross cultural, economic and language barriers, Thai people greatly increase their opportunities by knowing a global language such as English. In my travels, the Google Translate app has helped me overcome such barriers. when attempting to communicate in English with non-native speakers.

Is this need being met? How?:

Yes. Local college students at Mahidol visit the local elementary school to teach English to the students there in fun ways. This helps young kids remember the words better and practice their English skills in a more memorable and organic way.
