Taiwan's Unique Daily Chore: Trash Collection!

Introduction:

In Taiwan, the trash is collected in a fairly different way than in the United States. Let's talk about it!

What community need did I learn about?:

In Taiwan, food compost and other types of trash cannot really be left to sit. Whether inside the home or in a dumpster, people in Taiwan do not leave trash for more than a couple days at a time because of its risk of spoiling. Trash spoiling can cause the areas around the trash to smell and attract bugs and critters. Because of this risk, the community needs frequent trash collection services.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community needs this service because Taiwan is very humid, so trash can grow rotten easily. It is also a necessity because many homes are in small alleys, so the use of common dumpsters or trash cans is not feasbile. People need the space in the alleys to drive.

Is this need being met? How?:

Like an ice cream truck, the trash truck comes to each street and plays music to alert you that it's arrived! The trucks either play "Fur Elise" by Beethoven or "Maiden's Prayer" by Tekla Bądarzewska-Baranowska (this is what they play in my neighborhood). When you hear the music, you know you have to go downstairs to your trash collection spot and throw your trash bags into the truck.
