In Berlin, there are many authentically German foods to try. You may have heard of currywurst, which is sausage covered in a tomato sauce and curry powder. Also, döner kebabs are very famous, and they are made using seasoned meat that is stacked on a spit that turns against a heater to keep it warm. Pretzels and beer are very popular here as well. A lot of these foods include meat and dairy products; however, I am a vegetarian. I was surprised to find that there are also lots of vegetarian options here, including falafel döners, which are my favorite!
I tried an authentic German pretzel and falafel döner in Berlin, close to my residence in the neighborhood of Kreuzberg.
I felt excited to try these new foods! I wanted to see if the German pretzel differed from the pretzels that I had eaten in the United States, and they do! German pretzels are much bigger and are sold at stands. American pretzels are generally thicker, sweeter, and softer than German pretzels; however, German pretzels are fresher, as they are intended to be eaten right after they are baked. I highly recommend trying one. When I tried the döner, I was pleasantly surprised. I think it has become my new favorite food.
