Language in Spain is a Superpower

It was a small interaction, but I genuinely felt like a hero afterward. In that moment, I realized that knowing a language is about so much more than being able to translate words. Language allows you to connect with people and actually help them.

I have also been amazed by how quickly many immigrants who come to Spain learn Spanish. After talking with some families here, I realized that learning a new language is often a necessary part of building a life in a new country. I find it especially cool when I walk into a shop and the shopkeeper speaks to me in perfect Spanish, even though they may have come from another country themselves. It shows how much a person can learn when they are surrounded by a language every day and are motivated to communicate. It also reminds me that learning a language is not something that only happens in a classroom. Sometimes, life itself becomes the classroom.

At the same time, I realized that learning a new language can sometimes come with a downside. After speaking with some families here, I noticed that immigrant parents may learn Spanish very quickly, while their children can sometimes grow up without learning their parents’ native language as well. This made me think about how language is connected to heritage. Learning the language of a new country can open so many doors, but maintaining your original language can also preserve a connection to your family and culture. There is something special about being able to speak both.

I also realized that learning a language is partly up to the person who is learning it. Sometimes, when shopkeepers notice that you are American, they mmediately start speaking English to you.
