Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I averaged out at about five miles of walking every day just by exploring my neighborhood, so at least I'll be burning off the calories from my host mom's generous portions! According to Google, I've done about 50 miles of traveling within Tokyo itself, so I'm definitely glad to have my train card.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

It's about 6,665 miles from Houston to Tokyo, so it's been a bit of a trip. I'm looking forward to exploring different parts of Japan once I get settled, but I want to make sure that I get a good grasp of Tokyo before branching out too far.

How did I get around this week?:

Tokyo has been my first experience with adequate public transportation since Houston doesn't have a train system or a robust fleet of busses. Every day, I wait at the bus stop around the corner from my homestay and ride all the way to Nakano station, which is my local train station. From there, I usually ride to Shinjuku station, which has connections all over Tokyo. Being able to get anywhere in the city without a car is incredible, and I love seeing the scenery fly by from inside the train cabin.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The Tokyo Disaster Prevention Education Center.
