Korean Traditions

Introduction:

Hello my fellow travelers,

For the tradition section this week I will introduce the hanbok which is the traditional lady’s dress-wear. Hanbok was first introduced during the Goguryeo Dynasty (37 BCE to 668 CE). I had hoped to be wearing it today to show you guys, but sadly it’s way too cold a time in the year for this kind of clothing.  I’m told it’s best to wear the hanbok in the spring and summer..

What tradition did I learn about?:

The hanbok can be categorized by gender, age, and season. It was designed for easier movement to go about daily life. Differently colored hanbok symbolized the wearer's social position and marital status. Bright colors, for example, were typically worn by children and girls, and less bright colors were worn by middle aged women. Unmarried women often wore yellow and red while matrons wore green and red, and women with sons wore navy. The upper classes donned a variety of colors, whereas commoners wore white with a variation of shades of pale pink, light green, gray and charcoal on special occasions.
