La Feria de Málaga

Introduction:

Every culture has its traditions. We're no strangers to celebrations in the U.S, from parades, to fairs, to birthday cakes; we always find a way to celebrate the world around us. I wanted to talk about the things that bring people together, whether it be complete strangers or family, or simple or extravagant.

What tradition did I learn about?:

La Feria de Málaga.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

La Feria de Málaga is a local, annual tradition celebrating the expulsion of Moorish troops from the city in 1487 by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabel I of Castille, who are often credited for the victory. Now, it's seen as more of a historical commemoration than a celebration, but the fair retains many celebratory elements. Wine, flamenco dancing, fireworks, speeches, bullfighting, and of course, the fair itself with a large selection of games and rides in La Calle del Infierno. There's also a concert that I was lucky enough to attend. In addition to all this, there are moments of religious and historic importance, like La Romería de la Victoria, where people dress in traditional fashions and ride on horseback to offer flowers to the Virgin Mary at a nearby cathedral.

The Feria de Málaga emphasizes history and the traditional Spanish identity, focusing on keeping tradition alive.
