For a long time now, soccer has been the main sport watched in Spain. Teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona FC are some of the most well known teams in the world with some of the most recognizable players of all time. Ever heard of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? This culture around soccer is so big in Spain that every big city in the country has at least one team for the city. Seville, being one of the biggest cities in the country, is no exception, even having two teams within the same city.
What I learned about was not a tradition specifically, but more of a cultural event for the people of Seville. I am talking about the rival game of soccer of the two teams of the city, Sevilla FC and Betis FC. People here are very passionate about soccer (or futbol how they call it here) and in Seville, you either root for Sevilla or Betis. They are each other's biggest rivals and that competitiveness transfers to their fans.
At least twice a year, the two Seville teams play against each other in a game called "El Derbi de Sevilla" also called "El Gran Derbi" (The Great Derby). People care a lot about their team, but this one game is the one they care about the most in the year. It is really fun because poeple wear their team's jersey the day before, the day of, and if they win, the day after the game.
