This week, my journey to Pingxi in the northern mountains took me across 3 buses and 2 trains for a 3 hour journey. The journey was about 70 miles one way!
Taiwan is a relatively small island. So far, I have covered the top half of the island, from the northern capital in Taipei, down to my home base in Hsinchu, down to the cities of Taichung and Chiayi in the center of the island. I’m hoping to explore further south this semester!
Taiwan has great public transportation! My school campus has a shuttle bus. Besides that, Hsinchu has a local bus network and is connected to the regional bus, rail and high speed rail services running across the island. When I visited Taipei, I also rode some of its fast and clean subway lines.
Besides public transportation, I also took advantage of bikeshare bicycles and caught a few rides on friends' scooters. Mopeds and scooters are extremely common in Taiwan, where warm weather and tight streets/traffic make them ideal commuting vehicles.
