Integrating into my Puebla Family

Also, you can’t flush toilet paper down the toilets in Mexico, so there are trash bins in every bathroom to deposit toilet paper. This took some getting used to! We also have to let Lorena know when we are going to shower so that she can turn on the water heater. If I forget to tell her my showers are really cold!

When I first arrived, I felt so overwhelmed and thought I could never get used to living in my new home. Now I feel like I have been living her forever. I’ve become very familiar with the area. I often run in a beautiful neighborhood park called “El Jardin del Arte." There is a plaza nearby with a delicious taco place called “Tacos Lalo” and a panaderia, (bakery), where I often buy conchas (a Mexican pastry). The equivalent of a Walgreens or CVS in Mexico is called “Oxxo”. There is an Oxxo nearby that I often visit to get some snacks.

Living with a host family has been a great way to integrate myself into the community. It allows me to speak Spanish and try so many different foods. My host mom is the best and has made my experience in Puebla so much better. She even refers to my roommate and me as “mis hijas,” my daughters! I already know I am going to miss her so much when I leave.
