My New Home in Haifa

Just the other day we discovered that Jerusalem has a Mexican restaurant with really good reviews, so guess where we'll be going soon! Our first adventure was horseback riding at the beach and for our upcoming one, we are planning to visit Spain and Poland during our winter break!

I had no problem integrating myself into the social life here, but some differences between Israel and California threw me off in the beginning. Israelis are known to be late to everything. Yes, everything. I noticed this since the day I got here. Our orientation, our scheduled dinner and our campus tour all began later than the time we were told. This was strange to me because punctuality has always been enforced at my home university and with my family, too, unless, of course, we were going to a party. Mexicans are known to be late to every single one of those! I’ve noticed that professors also start their classes late, but here it’s nothing to be frowned upon. It’s simply a cultural part of who they are. There are many other little differences, like the electrical outlets, of course, and the fact that the front cover of books for Israelis is what would be the back cover for us. They also read from right to left instead of from left to right like we do.

Even though I felt a bit scared the first day I got here, I knew I was going to have a great time. I can confidently say that I’m enjoying every moment here so far!
