This week I traveled around 5 or so hours east of Junín down into the selva, the jungle. It takes a long road down from the mountains with some gorgeous views of rivers and waterfalls and tropical jungles, and through long tunnels cut into the mountians.
So far, I've traveled from my home in Northern Virginia to Miami, and then from there to Lima, Peru. After living there for a few months for training, I traveled around 6 hours or so into the mountains to my home for the next two years in Junín. I have explored a lot around here, having traveled my farthest north about an hour to another city called Cerro de Pasco, and my farthest east to Oxapampa in the Amazon jungle. I have yet to go farther south than Lima.
I got around on my bicyle in Junín and to leave the city, I take cars. It's not heavily regulated or organized, but since there is very little public transport in Peru, you have to take private cars, buses or colectivos, which are kind of like large private vans that can fit close to 20 people. I took 3 different cars to get to Oxapampa, with each one only moving between different cities along the way, about 2 hours each.
