Camels live in the desert, and in Morocco, there is a big desert called the Sahara. There are lots of sand dunes—big hills made of sand. There aren’t many trees or water in the desert, so animals that live there have to be really strong. Camels are perfect for this place because they can live there for a long time without needing much water.
Camels are amazing at surviving in the desert. Their hump is full of fat, not water, and they use that fat for energy when they don’t have food. They can drink a lot of water all at once and not drink again for many days. Their noses can close up so they don’t breathe in the sand when the wind blows. Their feet are wide so they don’t sink into the sand when they walk. And their long eyelashes protect their eyes from the sun and sand. It’s like they were made just for the desert!
Camels can get tired or sick if they don’t have enough food or water. They can also get hurt if people don’t take care of them or make them carry too much weight. In some places, people are kind to camels and make sure they rest and eat. In other places, people might not treat them as well, and that’s sad. We should always be gentle with animals and take care of them. Some people worry that if camels aren’t treated right, they could get sick or stop being around in the future.
