Over the past two months, you all have followed along as I explored my community Maubara, as well as the capital of Timor Leste, Dili. I hope you have learned something interesting about a country you probably had never even heard of before (I sure hadn't before I was told I was coming here)! Have you learned where Timor Leste is on the map?

I have mentioned a few times that I am a Peace Corps Volunteer, but I haven't told you too much about it yet. Peace Corps Volunteers work in six different sectors: Agriculture, Community Economic Development, Education, Environment, Health and Youth Development. So really anyone can become a Peace Corps Volunteer no matter their jobs. When you apply for the Peace Corps, you can apply to do a certain job in a specific country, or you can just say you're willing to go wherever you are most needed - that's how I ended up all the way across the world in Timor Leste.

As a volunteer, I spent two months at the beginning of my service learning the local language and learning about the school system in Timor to prepare to be the best teacher I could be. Then I was sent to my community where I was expected to live with a host family, teach at the local schools and organize after-school programs. I also help my community with whatever they need and participate in local events.
