Kossuth Lajos was able to escape and fled to the United States.
The country of Hungary was placed under military law until 1867 when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 gave autonomy back to Hungary, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire was established. The April Laws were negotiated into this compromise and re-established in Hungary. In the United States, Kossuth Lajos continued to fight for Hungary’s independence and rights until he died in 1894. He became the second foreigner to speak on the floor of US Congress.
