Homelessness in Berlin

Introduction:

Homelessness in Berlin mirrors challenges I knew in New York, revealing the urgent needs of vulnerable populations. Its a reminder that many of the causes of homelessness are not unique to any one country. Berlin does have one unique solution to this challenge that I've observed, though.

What community need did I learn about?:

Since moving to Berlin, a community need I’ve learned about is homelessness in the city. In New York City, homelessness is something that I grew up seeing. The major causes of homelessness in NYC are a lack of affordable housing and income disparity. This is also the case here in Berlin, as housing shortages and economic instability often lead to people living on the streets and in shelters. Like in NYC, a lot of homeless people in Berlin are visible on the trains, in parks, and on the streets. Many people experiencing homelessness in Berlin include not only long-term residents but also migrants from other parts of Germany and the European Union who are looking for work and opportunities.

Why does the community have this need?:

Some of the biggest causes of homelessness in Berlin and Germany as a whole are a shortage of housing, displacement caused by rising rent and gentrification, and economic instability.
